The Song of Gabriel

Luke 2:1-20

Connect:

Share how you have seen God in the Highs and Lows of your week.

Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Read:

Context: Work as group to put together a picture of what is happening in the story:

  • There had been no prophetic word from God for hundreds of years

  • Shepherds were considered the lowest of vocations/status in the society

  • An outdoor life—hardy, rough & tough men, lots of time, not ‘busy’

Read the passage out loud together.

Reflect:

Share about a song that has a powerful emotional connection for you, especially something that brings back a sense of celebration, joy, anticipation fulfilled… (Luke 2:1-7)

Discuss the transition of the shepherd’s fear transformed into joy (Luke 2:8-12)

  • Angel appearing, Glory of the Lord

  • “Do not be afraid, I bring you good News… (Luke 2:10-12)

  • …to all people” (No regard to color, wealth, background or position!)

  • The angelic host (army choir) sang the song in Luke 2:13-14.

How is God glorified in the way He brings peace to people?

Discuss the phrase, “Peace to those on whom His favor rests” (v14)

  • The shepherds left their sheep and went out to find Jesus… then went out and told everyone about Him! (Luke 2:15-17)

  • Their spiritual curiosity was peaked—share something that you are “curious” about with regard to God and His ways

The theme of fear leading to joy leading to proclamation is seen in the angels, the presence of God Himself, and the shepherds—where are you right now?  What’s next?

Respond:

“Some things in life are too important not to share” (the reason Mercedes shared their safety tech with the world).  If “Joy is the natural response to Jesus”, Whom we know, select one person you can share that joy with this Christmas.

Close in prayer for God’s compelling love and anointing in fulfilling that commitment.
