Prayer:
· Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.
Read:
· Context: Work as group to put together a picture of what is happening in the story:
o Paul’s letter to the Philippian church is one of encouragement and pastoring
o This section of the letter is quoting a well-known ancient hymn
o The purpose of the hymn is to establish Jesus’ divinity as God and His humanity as man
· Read the passage out loud together.
Reflect:
· Discuss the contrast between seeing life as “It’s all about me” vs “It’s all about others” … what are the changes in attitude, behavior, thinking patterns, spending, etc?
· What does it mean that Jesus “humbled Himself” (Phil 2:5-7)
o His Privilege as divine
o His Position of power
o His being born as the most vulnerable form a human can take as a baby
· Why did Jesus have to come to “do for us what we could not do for ourselves”?.
o He was the absolutely holy “God with us” (John 1:1,14)
o He was the final sacrifice to which all others were only anticipating (Heb 10:1-18)
o He (holy) took our place (condemned sinners) and absorbed the wrath of God against sin for all who believe (IS 53:1-12, Mark 10:45, Gal 2:20, Eph 5:2…)
· What do we learn about the way God responds to those who humble themselves simply because that humility acknowledges His will here, now?
o Facing trials with humble, “Your will be done” faith does not necessarily mean we will be rescued; it does mean that what happens next matters in eternity as we obey now
o The reward for humility is as great as the God we obey in that act of humility (Phil 2:9-13)
Respond:
o Saved: What are some things that are causing pain in your heart/mind right now that arise from a lack of humility?
o Unsaved: If peace with God requires humility of repentance, do you want to do that to get that?
