See World: A Sight for Sore Eyes

Jonah 3

Connect:

  • Share how you have seen God in the Highs and Lows of your week.

  • Discuss how resolutions made last week in “growing more like Jesus” worked themselves out – what God did in and through you (Phil. 2:13) Celebrate and thank God for those together and pray with those who experienced some “Lows” this week, for God’s encouragement for them.

Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We are launching into a new series looking at the life and ministry of the prophet Jonah! In so many ways, we are going to see our own story in that of Jonah. This week, we are looking at chapter 3.

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflect:

Share about a time where you found it difficult to tell the difference between the condemnation of the enemy and the conviction of the Holy Spirit; how can we tell the difference?

Discuss the following Scriptures and read the verses in context:

  • Read Jonah 3:1

    • Discuss how God’s choice not to condemn us when we repent encourages us to walk in obedience. (John 3:16-18; John 8:3-11; Romans 8:1-4)

    • Why is it important that we personalize our message to those with whom we share the gospel? (Acts 17:22-34; Psalm 141:3; James 3:2-8)

    • How can our own comfort blind us to seeing where God might be leading us? (John 4:34-36; Matt. 19:16-26; Rev. 3:15-19)

  • Read Jonah 3:2-9

    • It was not until Jonah was drowning in the sea that he turned to God. How does faith grow after coming to the end of our own ability? (Ephesians 3:20-21; 1 Kings 18:17-39; Daniel 3:15-28)

  • Read Jonah 3:10

    • Nineveh repented from their sin against all odds. Do you know anyone that you think there’s no way they would come to faith? How should we think about those “There’s just no way they’re turning to Jesus” folks? (Matt. 9:9-12; Acts: 9:1-6 and 10-18; Acts 10:9-28)

Respond:

Scott ended the message this week with the reminder that we are a conduit of God’s mercy, and God is the One best equipped to decide where to direct, invest, use and channel that conduit! Spend some time praying for ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to us this week about where, when and to whom we can be a channel of God’s grace!
