See World: No End in Sight

Jonah 2

Connect:

  • Share how you have seen God in the Highs and Lows of your week.

  • Discuss how resolutions made last week in “growing more like Jesus” worked themselves out – what God did in and through you (Phil. 2:13) Celebrate and thank God for those together and pray with those who experienced some “Lows” this week, for God’s encouragement for them.

Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We are launching into a new series looking at the life and ministry of the prophet Jonah! In so many ways, we are going to see our own story in that of Jonah. This week, we are looking at chapter 2.

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflect:

Share about a time when you were God was clearly giving you a second chance you did not earn. What happened, and what did you learn about God… about yourself… about others affected?

Discuss the following Scriptures and read the verses in context:

  • Read Jonah 2:1-10

  • Think about other people TO WHOM God gives a second chance— what do we learn about GOD from these stories and what we see with Jonah here? (Matt. 26:30-35; Mark 16:5-7; John 20:15-17; 1 Kings 18:17-18; 1 Kings 21:25-29)

  • Why does God give us second chances— should we always assume that God will give us a second chance? Why or why not? (Proverbs 29:1; Hosea 6:1-3; Romans 6:1-4)

  • Why do you think God sometimes does not take away the consequences for disobedience after providing a second chance? (2 Sam. 12:7-14; 2 Kings 21:10-11; 2 Chronicles 33:10-13, 15-16)

  • Talk about God’s patience as it is demonstrated in the lives of Jonah and others in Scripture. (Hosea 11:1-4, 8-9; Daniel 4:24-37; Nehemiah 9:16-21)

  • Jonah received mercy from God after his disobedience? When we receive this mercy, how should this change how he interact with others? (Matt. 18:23-33; Micah 6:8; James 2:13)

Respond:

Scott ended the message this week with the challenge to step into the opportunities God gives us— to reset, reinvest, or simply to do a 180 an repent! Spend some time praying in pairs, committing yourself to God’s purposes wherever in that mix you happen to be right now.
