Your Move: Gifts

1 Corinthians 12 and other Scriptures

Connect:

  • Share how you have seen God in the Highs and Lows of your week.

  • Discuss how resolutions made last week in “growing more like Jesus” worked themselves out – what God did in and through you (Phil. 2:13) Celebrate and thank God for those together and pray with those who experienced some “Lows” this week, for God’s encouragement for them.

Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We are launching into a new series looking at 6 aspects of a growing faith and a strong church! The last few weeks we have looked at Grace, Growth, Groups… and this week we look at how God equips us with GIFTS!

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflect:

Scott started out this weekend making the point that our gifts are from God Himself, and we serve best when we find our fit and follow it! Share a time when you were assigned a role that really DIDN’T fit! What was the impact of that on you, on your work, on team mates, and on those you were serving?

  • Explore what Scripture says about spiritual gifts and discuss how God wants us to receive and use them:

  • The point of a gift in God’s economy is to give it away, share it with others! What heart attitudes are going to work for OR against that purpose? ( 2 Peter 1:3-8, John 14:21, Psalm 51:10-12,)

  • Read these verses and discuss the connection between persistence, patience, dependence and obedience in receiving these gifts we have by His Spirit  (Luke 11:9-13, Acts 1:4-5, Romans 12:2-8,)

  • Read these verses on WHY God gives HIs people these gifts, and discuss how this can help us evaluate our own WHY in using these gifts— how are we doing with that? ( 1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-7, Ephesians 4:11-17, Ephesians 5:15-18, Colossians 3:16-17 1 Peter 4:10-11,)

  • Read these verses on what it looks like when we are using spiritual gifts in a way that is aligned with God’s character and His work— develop a list of characteristics that can help you identify, “OK, so THIS is what it looks like when serving is supernatural, not just natural!” (1 Corinthians 12:31-13:7, Mark 10:42-45, Philippians 3:3-6)

  • Read these Scriptures and discuss the interplay between humility and dignity in the use of our gifts— we’re not to be arrogant and we’re not to hide… how do we stay in the center? ( 1 Corinthians 12:12-28, Matthew 23:2-12, Luke 17:7-10,)

  • What does it look like when we are using our gifts responsibly— doing OUR part as God does HIS? (Romans 11:29, 1 Timothy 4:13-15, Matthew 25:14-29)

Respond:

Scott ended the message reminding us that the identity and role we are to take up in response to our gifting is that of a servant— Jesus led the way in this, and He has called us to follow His lead! We can use a gift in all kinds of ways, so lets close in prayer that God would work in us to give us the heart to match His Gifts, and the courage, diligence and joy to live them out in service to His Kingdom!
