Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We use the term Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is certainly in the Bible, and he indwells every follower of Jesus. But there remains an element of ignorance, confusion, and even reluctance to explore the topic much further. And yet the irony is that the Holy Spirit is so critical to what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. This week we are looking at the role of the Holy Spirit in helping us discern God’s will in situations we face in life…

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience:

  • Share about a time when one of you had a decision to make— one that really mattered… but you had no clue which direction to go. Too many uncertainties, too many questions… but time was running out and you felt panic creeping in. Talk about how you navigated that time.

    • Group Discussion:

      1. When we start with Scripture in discerning God’s will, some things Scripture says are VERY counter-culture! How do we respond to the argument, “Oh that was just for the ancient days— we are under grace now. Anyway, I think Paul may have been swayed by his culture just like us today— how do we even know what is really God’s truth?”. (Psalm 1, Proverbs 1:1, Matt 7:24-27, Romans 12:1-2, Hebrews 4:12, James 1:22-24, 2 Timothy 3:16)

      2. Read James 1:5-8. Why is faith so critical when we pray for wisdom— i.e., we are to “believe and not doubt…” about… what, exactly?

      3. Read John 14:26-27 and Phil 4:6-7. Talk about God’s role and our role in finding peace as we navigate challenging decisions.

      4. Read John 16:14-15, 1 Cor 10:31, Col 3:17. Why is the glory of God so absolutely central in discerning the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives?

      5. Just for reference, the 7 reference points we looked at this week in helping us discern the leading of teh Holy Spirit are:

        1. Start with Scripture

        2. Pray for Discernment

        3. Follow His Peace

        4. Seek Wise Counsel

        5. Check the Circumstances

        6. Seek God’s Glory

        7. Posture for Surrender

Application:

We confront issues of God’s leading all the time. Developing the discipline of seeking and following God’s will is a life long pursuit in which we can grow. Of the 7 reference points above, which do you find most challenging? Spend some time surrendering that area to the Lord and committing to live under His leading.

Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer committing with and before each other to doing what it takes to discern and follow God’s leading in our lives, entrusting the outcome to Him.
