Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We use the term Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is certainly in the Bible, and he indwells every follower of Jesus. But there remains an element of ignorance, confusion, and even reluctance to explore the topic much further. And yet the irony is that the Holy Spirit is so critical to what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. This week we are looking at the role of the Holy Spirit in our journey to saving faith in Jesus….

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience:

  • Share about a time when you had a sudden crisis. Family, workplace, financial, physical… How did it feel to suddenly realize “Uh Oh, I thought things were fine and they’re NOT!”?

    • Group Discussion:

      1. Jesus gave a challenging word to His disciples about the how and why of the Holy Spirit’s conviction. Read John 16:1-7 and discuss why we need conviction in each area and how the Holy Spirit does that. If you have an example from your own experience, share that. (John 3:3-18, Eph 2:8,9, John 15:26ff)

      2. Why is repentance essential in the salvation journey? (Acts 2:37-38, Matt 4:17, 2 Cor 7:10, Luke 24:47, Rom 6:1-8, 1 John 1:9)

      3. What does it mean that our faith bears “fruit” (Matt 3:7-9, Acts 26:20, James 2:26, Phil 2:13, Rom 12:2, Eph 4:22-24, Col 3:9-10)

      4. Discuss each of these steps in the journey of salvation. Can we skip any of these? Is there any way that any are just mental/emotional (instead of being supernatural)?

        1. Conviction (John 16:7-11)

        2. Faith (Eph 2:8,9)

        3. Repentance (Rom 2:4)

        4. Renewal (TItus 3:5)

        5. Sealing (Eph 1:13-14)

        6. Assurance (Rom 8:15,16)

        7. Fruit (Gal 5:22-25, Matt 3:8)

Application:

We can be so concerned for a loved one that doesn’t know Jesus, we can push them too hard (as if we could make them feel conviction about sin). Let’s do a self-check and acknolwledge that only God can reveal God, and He does that Spirit to spirit. We are called to be faithful witnesses, ambassadors… let’s pray for them and focus there.

Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer for those in our lives who do not yet have a living relationship with Jesus, not yet “born again” by His Spirit, not yet alive to the things of God. ray that blind eyes would be opened and that they would have ears to hear and hearts to respond.
