Review:
We are moving into a series called “Election Direction” where we are looking at Biblical teaching and principles that help to ground us as believers in a deeply fragmented nation moving into election season. This week, our focus is on “King over Country” where we look at the Lordship of Christ and the way this affects our engagement with the upcoming election…
The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…
o What did you learn about God?
o What did you learn about people?
o What did you learn about yourself?
o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?
Reflection:
Personal Experience:
What are some of the differences between living under a king and living within a democratic society? Compare and contrast the two in terms of the role and identity of citizens.
Group Discussion:
Read Act 1:1-9. These men had been with Jesus from the beginning, heard everything He had said… and still missed the point about Jesus’ role in the world.
Discuss why that happened, how could they have missed this?
Discuss Jesus response to them— why did Jesus respond in that way?
Read Revelation 1:12-17, and then select one of the 7 churches in the following chapters and read through what Jesus said to that church.
Why is it important to understand Jesus’ role in our lives as King, not just as the Good Shepherd?
In reading what Jesus said to he church you selected, what do we learn about Jesus as our King and our Great High Priest?
Read Matthew 6:5-14 and then 6:19-34 and then John 18:33-38
Jesus prayed that God’s reign would come here on earth; He also said His Kingdom was not of the world. How can both those things be true?
How does “seeking first the Kingdom of God” help us in dealing with greed/worry?
What does any of this have to do with our actions as citizens in the upcoming election?
Read Matthew 25:14-30
Contrast the actions as well as the outcomes of the 3 servants. Why was there such a lavish reward for faithfulness and such a severe punishment for “wicked laziness”?
What exactly was so wicked and lazy about burying the treasure then giving it back?
How does this apply to Christian citizenship during this election season?
Response:
When given the opportunity, Solomon asked God for a heart of wisdom and the ability to discern right from wrong. Spend some time praying together for our nation as a nation as Americans go to vote, praying like Solomon for discernment as we cast our votes, for repentant hearts, and for revival of the Holy Spirit in our nation!
