Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We are moving into a series on 1 Thessalonians where Paul’s basic purpose was to encourage followers of Jesus to live ‘unstoppable’ lives in anticipation of the Lord’s return. Last week we looked at character, and this week we have a major focus on God’s Word as the foundation that grounds our faith.

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflect:

Experience:

  • Describe a time where God gave you the Spirit-empowered ability to forgive. What happened, how did it feel, what made you choose that?

Read 1 Thessalonians 2:13:

  • The Bible says that the Bible is the Word of God (2 Peter 1:20,21, 2 Timothy 3:16,17)…. but why do YOU believe that?

  • Read John 14:26, Romans 8:26, 1 Corinthians 2:10, Ephesians 1:13-14, James 1:21. How is our faith “alive” (Hebrews 4:12) in this way?

Read 2:14-16

  • Why do people who have decided to live in opposition to God so deeply hate those who live in acknowledgement of Him?

  • Read 1 Peter 2:20-21. Why does God call us to endure persecution/ suffering when He could easily save us from it?

Read 2:17-20

  • Why would Satan want to keep Paul away from this church of new believers?

  • Why does fellowship, solid teaching, prayer together… build up our faith? Isn’t faith deeply personal? Isn’t it just as good to worship God in our closet as in a church with 1000 people? What is it about being together that is so vital to living faith?

Respond:

Scott closed the message with a challenge to pay attention to the things that keep us apart. Spend some time together praying that the Holy Spirit would remind us of any “root of bitterness” that we have allowed to spring up, or maybe any apathy about making time for Christian fellowship. Commit to making your relationships an area of your lives where God is glorified and people are drawn to Him!
