Review:

Words matter. Some words describe us; some words define us. In this six-week journey through Romans 8, we'll unpack six theological words that describe what God has done, is doing, and will do for those who are in Christ. These aren't just words to understand; they’re realities that reshape our identity, our lives, our suffering, our hope, and our future. From no condemnation to no separation, Romans 8 shows us the unbreakable work of God. We'll define the words, and the words will define us.

This week we looked at what it means to be “Justified” and why that matters so much…

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience & Discussion:

  • Discuss: Have you ever been in a situation where you suddenly realized, “Wait, I don’t being here!!” Maybe it was standing in the wrong security line at an airport, standing in a camera view of someone’s broadcast, trying to open the wrong car door in a parking lot…. Describe that experience— what was it like and why did it matter that you were in the wrong place? What did you do about it?

  • Reflective Discussion (Remember to look at the context of the verses as you are reading! Look for key terms and help the group unpack and define them):

    • Read Romans 8:1-4. What stood out to you and why?

    • In Romans 7, Paul talks about the struggle we all have with the sin nature, demonstrating our need for a Savior.‍ ‍DISCUSS: Why is it that the law (knowing something is objectively wrong in God’s sight) cannot change us? Contrast the “I do what I do not want to do… what a wretched man I am, Who will rescue me…” (Rom 7:18-25) with Romans 8:1-4.

      • What is the “law of the Spirit”?

      • What does it mean that the Spirit “Gives us life”?

      • In your life experience as a believer, how has the law of the Spirit “set you free from the law of sin and death”?

    • Pastor Scott made the distinction between being a “slave to sin” and “struggling with sin”. DISCUSS: What is the difference (slave <> struggle) and how does faith in Jesus make that difference? (Rom 8:2-3, Phil 2:9-14, Gal 5:16-25)

    • There is a clear change of pathway to being made right with God. DISCUSS: Read the following verses in succession and then take turns using them to show how we must be saved (Rom 3:23, Rom 6:23, Rom 10:9,10, Rom 8:1)

Application:

We need to be ready to share about the hope held out to us in the Gospel with those around us as the opportunity arises. Why not commit to memorize the “Romans Road” (the 4 passages we read above in the last question) so you have a clear pathway to present the Gospel!

Prayer:

Spend some time thanking God for the great Salvation we have as we Acknowledge we are sinners in need of a Savior, Believe that Jesus died for our sin and Confess Him as our Savior and King.
