Review:
In a world constantly telling us we need more—more success, more knowledge, more spirituality, more control—the book of Colossians points us back to one unshakable truth: Jesus is enough. Paul writes to followers of Jesus who were being tempted to add other things to Jesus, but he reminds them that everything they truly need is already found in him. From our identity and transformation to our relationships, purpose, and mission, Jesus is not merely part of life—he is the center of it all. This series will explore how a bigger vision of Jesus changes everything. This week we looked at the difference between ‘seasoning’ our life with Jesus and “saturating” life with Him…
The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…
o What did you learn about God?
o What did you learn about people?
o What did you learn about yourself?
o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?
Reflection:
Personal Experience & Discussion:
Discuss: What’s the difference between 'seasoning a steak with salt & pepper VS marinating it? What difference does it make, what do you prefer?
Reflective Discussion (Remember to look at the context of the verses as you are reading! Look for key terms and help the group unpack and define them):
Read Col 3:15-17 together
Paul’s “why” for seeking peace is that, “as members of one body, you were called to peace”. DISCUSS: Think of a situation in which it is hard to ‘seek peace’, articulate that, and then refer to the following passages to discuss the difference it makes in THAT situation that we are the “body of Christ”. (Col 3:12-15, 1 Cor 12:12-27, Eph 4:1-6, Matt 5:23-24, Matt 18:15-17).
Paul’s view of the church in Colossae is a community of people who have permission (and sufficient trust) to encourage and admonish, teach and restore each other. DISCUSS: How do the following passages help us in understanding what that looks like in the character of our relationships with each other— if we actually did this, would it increase trust or not? What do you think? (Col 3:16, Rom 15:14, Heb 3:12-13, Gal 6:1-2, E[h 4:15-16, 2 Tim 2:24-26).
Doing everything “in Jesus Name” expresses the way Christian faith and Christian living are 2 sides of the same coin. DISCUSS: Thinking back over the past week, what difference would this ‘filter’ have made in our relationships/ communicaitons/ media use? Look at the following passages to support your discussion (Col 3:17, 1 Cor 10:31, 2 Cor 5:20, 1 Peter 2:12, Matt 5:14-16, Titus 2:7-8).
Application:
What are areas of your life right now that need an ‘audit’ to make that area a place where the light and presence of Jesus is evident? Ask the Lord to show you something specific and commit to consciously act on that this week.
Prayer:
Spend some time closing in prayer together thanking God for the unity we can experience in the Body of Christ, and committing yourself to seeking peace in acknowledgement of Christ.
