Review:
We are in a series looking at the 12 steps from AA through a Biblical lens as we look at the pathway of freedom in Christ and following Him whole heartedly. A phrase we are going to hear over and over is, “If you want to change your life, take it one step at a time (in other words, foundations matter!). This week we looked at the 7th step, the discipline of walking humbly in our life of faith…
The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…
o What did you learn about God?
o What did you learn about people?
o What did you learn about yourself?
o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?
Reflection:
Personal Experience:
What is the difference between healthy humility and unhealthy humiliation/ self-loathing? Talk about how that difference manifests in our actions, words, thought life and relationships.
Group Discussion:
There are somethings that just really matter. A grape vine needs light, nutrients, water and warmth… or it won’t grow. A great trellis won’t change that. Is it possible to experience the transforming power of God without humility, never challenging our pride and self-sufficiency? Read the following passages and discuss. (Prov 22:4, Ps 51:1-19, Is 66:2, Matt 23:12, Luke 18:9-14, Rom 12:3, Phil 2:3, James 4:10, 1 Peter 5:6)
Scott talked about “getting us to ask for the right thing”. (Prov 28:13, Mark 10:35-45)
They say it is “dangerous” to pray for humility! We pray for things God can GIVE us, not Take away! Talk about why God removes, prunes and refines us… those places where humility and surrender to His purposes is the only way through. (Ps 139:23-24, John 15:1-2, 2 Cor 7:1, Rom 12:1,2)
When God called people, some pushed back: Moses (Ex 4:10), Jeremiah (Jer 1:4-19), Isaiah (Is 6:1-8), Peter (Luke 5:4-11). Which of these (if any) were an expression of humility? How might we discern that from these passages?
Application:
The closer we get to Jesus, the more conscious e are of our sin and brokenness before God. The grace is that He loves us as we are, and too much to let us stay that way! What are some specific areas in our life where, right now, humility is necessary?
Prayer:
Spend some time in prayer asking God to give us eyes to see where we need to humble ourselves and pray for His transforming work, submitting ourselves in specific ways to the transforming work of His Spirit.
