Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We are in a series looking at the 12 steps from AA through a Biblical lens as we look at the pathway of freedom in Christ and following Him whole heartedly. A phrase we are going to hear over and over is, “If you want to change your life, take it one step at a time (in other words, foundations matter!). This week we looked at the third step to turn it over to God…

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience:

  • Many of us have done “team building” exercises that included a trust fall… so let’s do that in our Life Group (guys catch guys, girls catch girls). Try playing both the role of one who falls and one who catches. Talk about that eperience. Why is it so difficult to trust, and what is it like the moment we decide to do so and take an action?

    • Group Discussion:

      1. Big picture, what changes when we choose to trust God by turning over control of our lives to Him? Read the following passages and discuss (Rom 12:1, Prov 3:5,6, Ps 37:5-7, Matt 6:33, Phil 4:6-7)

      2. Why do you, personally, trust God… and what are the times you find that most difficult?

      3. Faith is characterized by its Object: Who do we believe God to Be? Read the following passages and reflect on this (Ex 34:6-7, Ps 103:8, Lam 3:22-23, Rom 8:28, James 1:17, Matt 7:7-11)

      4. Scott said, “Surrender is an act of worship”. What does that mean?

      5. John said, “When we surrender, we give up control, but we do not give up agency”. Read the following passages and discuss (Rom 12:1-2, Prov 3:5,6)

      6. What effect does surrender, the “turn it over,” have on our fears and anxieties? Discuss (Phil 4:6,7, Is 41:10, Ps 56:3-4, Matt 6:25-27, 2 Tim 1:7)

Application:

Surrendering to God enables a change in our character as He transforms us. Commit to letting the fruit of the Spirit grow through your life as you “take up your cross and follow” Jesus this week!

Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer committing yourself to the purposes of God in specific relationships or challenges that you are going to face this week. Entrust yourself to Him in these places!
