Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We had Baptism Sunday this weekend and the message looked at how God rescued us from our sin and its penalty, and the place of baptism as an act by which we signify we are now made new in Christ!

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience:

  • Share about a time where you had to be rescued. What was happening, how did it feel to be in a situation you could not resolve, and how did it feel to be rescued? How did this affect your view of others when they get into a situation that is over their heads?

    • Group Discussion:

      1. Read the following Scriptures and see if there is one that reminds you of a time where God healed you of an emotional, physical or spiritual pain or situation (Ps 34:17-18, Jonah 2:1-2, Col 1:13, 2 Cor 1:10, Ex 14:13-14)

      2. Read Colossians 1:12-13. Discuss

        1. Why we cannot save ourselves from this particular situation

        2. Why we need to realize that in order to understand grace.

        3. What is the “dominion of darkness” and how exactly does faith in Christ free us from this?

      3. THe Bible talks about us as dead in sin, blind, stiff necked, foolish… these are strong words! Read some of the following Scriptures and discuss what we are saved FROM (Is 5:20, Prov 14:12, 2 Tim 3:1-5, 1 John 2:11)

      4. Read the following scriptures and contrast where we came from to our new identity in Christ: What changed, and why does that matter? (1 Peter 2:9, Phil 3:20, Rom 8:16-17, 2 Cor 5:17, John 1:12)

      5. Forgiveness means that our sins will not be held against us— this is what it means to be rescued! Reflect on the following passages and share about how you have experienced this in your own walk of faith and the impact of these truths on your hope in Christ: (Ps 103:12, Micah 7:19, Is 1:18, Rom 8:1, COl 2:13-14, 2 Cor 5:17)

Application:

We have been greatly rescued from a situation where we had no hope of our own. Who else needs to hear that? Let’s commit to sharing that with them!

Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer thanking God for the rescue from sin, the hope that He has called us to, and the opportunities to share that message with others.
