Review:

We are starting a three week series slide called Sharpened - Forging Faith Through Godly Relationships. We are all formed to become better people. To become more Christ-like through the relationships we surround ourselves with. God uses people in front of us, beside us and even behind us to sharpen our faith, stretch our growth and shape our legacy. The goal of the series is to develop the core practice of biblical community. This week we looked at the idea of mentoring (e.g. Paul and Timothy) and how the Lord calls us to walk together as we walk with Jesus…

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience:

  • Share about a person who took an active and intentional part in shaping your character, your choices in life. Who were they, how did you connect with them, what was their impact?

  • Is there anyone you can point to right now who has characteristics you want to build into your own life? Talk about that.

    • Group Discussion:

      1. Read the following verses and discuss the role and limits of those whom we see as “examples" to follow” in the Christian faith? (2 Thes 3:7, 1 Cor 11:1, 1 Cor 4:16)

      2. If Paul was imperfect, many of us will feel we can never measure up to being an “example”. Talk about that— where does grace, accountability, spurring one another on… come into play as we seek to walk in step with the Spirit?

      3. Pastor Ben reminded us that it is critical for believers to point each other back tot he Source of our faith and practices. What is that Source? (2 Tim 3:14-15, Romans 8 1-11, Phil 3:8-18)

      4. If a mentor were to challenge you to change something or stop doing something (not just get better at what you are already good at), how might you respond to that?

Application:

Ask God to lead you to someone worth emulating, take the time to get to know them and learn how they respond to life, and ask them to mentor you as you grow to become more like Jesus.

Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer recommitting ourselves first to Christ, asking Him to direct our steps and our desires. Ask Him to help us to identify and reach out to someone who can walk with us in strengthening our walk with Jesus!
