Break & Build: Built Different

Joshua 1

Connect:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

This series, Break and Build, Pastor Luke is leading us through a 2-week series on breaking patterns of thought and action we have internalized from our past and choosing a different path for our own mind and our own families in accordance with God’s Word and in the strength of His Spirit. This week, we looked at building differently…

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflection:

Personal Experience:

  • Share about the legacy you aspire to leave behind you. As Pastor Luke said, “A legacy is not told by you; it is told about you.” What are a few things that you want told about you?

    Group Discussion:

    1. Read Joshua 1:1-2, v5-9

      1. Why did God say to Joshua, “Moses, My servant, is dead” and then immediately give marching orders to do something impossible (cross the raging river)?

      2. God calls Joshua to lead… by following Him diligently. Identify the sources of Joshua’s courageous strength in v5-9 (God’s presence, trust in God’s promises, studying and obeying His Word…). Share how you have seen these play out in your own lives.

      3. Why is Joshua called not simply to read God’s Word, but to meditate on it? What difference does that make?

    2. Read Joshua 4:5-7

      1. The pile of stones stood as a memorial, a cultural memory of God doing the impossible! Why create that memorial, why not just tell the story?

      2. What are some “Spiritual bricks” that you want to build into your legacy of faith? (Heb 10:24-25, Rom 12:1-2, Matt 7:24-25)

    3. Read Joshua 24:15

      1. Compare the challenges to our faith in times of challenge vs times of blessing. Why might it be more challenging to strengthen our faith in times of blessing?

      2. Discuss how we stay strong in our faith in each situation— how do we stay strong in trials and how do we stay strong in blessing?

Application:

What choices are in front of us today that let us choose whom we will serve?

Prayer:

Spend some time in prayer committing ourselves to serve the Lord with our whole self for HIs glory!
