Review:
We are in a series looking at the 12 steps from AA through a Biblical lens as we look at the pathway of freedom in Christ and following Him whole heartedly. A phrase we are going to hear over and over is, “If you want to change your life, take it one step at a time (in other words, foundations matter!). This week we looked at the 10th step of maintaining awareness…
The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…
o What did you learn about God?
o What did you learn about people?
o What did you learn about yourself?
o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?
Reflection:
Personal Experience:
“Watchman on the wall” is in some ways an outdated metaphor, but imagine living in a city where that vigilance was needed to keep a city safe! Discuss the role of the ancient ‘watchman” and compare this to our role in maintaining vigilance in our own lives/ our own families regarding spiritual awareness…
Group Discussion: (Remember to look at the context of the passages you read!)
What is the worst that can happen if we do NOT maintain our vigilance? Where does that path lead?
Divide up into pairs and have each pair take one Scripture ( Eph 5:13-20, 1 Peter 5:8-11, Romans 13:11-13, Mark 13:35-37). Each pair needs to reflect on their verse to answer this: WHY an/or HOW do we stay spiritually alert?
Read the following Scriptures and discuss how our role and the role of the Holy Spirit interact in maintaining vigilance in the Christian life (Gal 5:16-25, Romans 8:6-16, Eph 4:29-32)
What is our role <> His Role?
How do we <> the Holy Spirit work together?
Grace both leads us to repentance and allows us to press on. Read Philippians 3::7-14 and Eph 6:13. Discuss how we are to endure even as we know that we fail along the way.
Application:
The goal here is progress, not perfection… and we will always have room for progress! What are some specific areas where you want to progress in your walk of faith (fear of [x], anger, greed, gossip…)? Name it and write down 3 things you can do daily to develop habits of vigilance.
Prayer:
Spend some time in prayer that God will give us a heart that is both ready and able to stay alert.
