Relationships worth Fighting For: Talking with your Teen

Ephesians 6 and selected Scriptures

Connect:

  • Share how you have seen God in the Highs and Lows of your week.

Prayer:

Pray that God would lead your discussion time and bring fresh insight, conviction, and hope through your time together.

Review:

We are moving into a series called “Relationships worth fighting for”. Last week, we looked at ‘parenting’ and this week we are looking at talking with your teen.

The Grand Tour of the message: Thinking back on what you heard this Sunday…

o What did you learn about God?

o What did you learn about people?

o What did you learn about yourself?

o What do you want to commit to putting into practice?

Reflect:

Experience:

  • Just for fun: Translate this verse from Teen slang: Don’t flex on me, sus dude. If I slip, I don’t dip. When life goes on dark mode, Cap G keeps it lit. (Micah 7:8)

  • When you were 15, if someone asked you, “Who are you?” how would you have answered?

  • Read Eph 2:10 and 2 Timothy 1:7. Ephesians talks about God’s work in us (we are His workmanship) and through us (good works for us to walk in)! Timothy talks about dealing with fear.

    • What is the difference in HOW we let a teen know they are valued for who they are, VS being valued for what they can do/ win/ produce?

    • Let’s say that your teen was struggling with anxiety over an upcoming final exam. How would you use these verses to talk then through that anxiety?

  • Read Numbers 11:14-17: Moses needed help… and that help made a BIG difference in his life as a leader!

    • Discuss the adage “it takes a village to raise a child”— What might “village life” look like in application of this verse? What would that life require from teens, parents and the church?

    • Are there any places at ZCC where this is already happening?

Respond:

Parents and teens need our prayers, our encouragement and our participation as the Lord allows. Spend some time praying together that the Lord would lead and encourage parents even as they lead, love and encourage their teens!
